Bikes

If you are coming to the Netherlands it’s very important that you learn to ride a bicycle commonly called bike. Bike in Netherlands is the most common means of transportation. Here every one owns at least one bike. Every one from a child going to nursery school till head of a department uses bike. So you will also like to have a bike.

Prices of bike here can vary from 25€ to 1500€. But more expensive the bike is more is the chance that it gets stolen. So it is advisable to bike a second hand bike. There are lots of bike shops in the city center. But the cheapest is to buy bikes from the city council. The city council or Police recovers abandoned or stolen bikes and sell them for a very modest price after repairing.

Such bikes are sold every 1st Friday of the month in the city center.

What you have to do is follow the following steps.

  1. Get up early in the morning (people stand there from 5 am) and stand in the queue at Oude Boteringestraat 8.
  2. Take your number at 7:30
  3. Come again to choose your bike at 9.
  4. The cost of the bike may very from 25€ to 100€. Cash only.

I can assure you that the bikes here are four times (400%) cheaper and better than bikes bought in the commercial shops.

Enjoy your stay in Groningen.
